Conventionally there are 36 alphabets in Igbo language. Eight
of these are vowels, nine are blends and nineteen are
consonants.
To enable us capture
more words from the diverse dialects of Igbo language for our lexicon, we have coined the blend “Wh” from English and adapted the letter
“Ž” from the west European language literature to
supplement the conventional alphabets.
We hope that our
students and users of this resource will appreciate the flavour this addition brings to literature in our beautiful language.
